6/7 Religion

Start with Hello

6/7 religion class worked in small groups
to solve the big problem of social isolation.

They read 6 example scenarios,
picked one to focus on,
and discussed as a small group.
They then lead a whole class discussion on their scenario.
Discussions focused on identifying social isolation,
empathizing with another person,
and brainstorming realistic ways to reach out.

They then took the ideas from the class discussions
and gave life to their scenario
and their solutions.

Here they are working with their groups to create their skits.

8th grade is continuing their work on Of Mice and Men.
On Tuesday they got to enjoy the nice weather
while working on their text analysis.

Leadership Installation

The Student Council, Student Ambassadors, and Flames of Service
were made official at our Mass of the Holy Spirit on Wednesday.
They took a break from practice
to write a goal for themselves in these roles
on a wax catcher that will be used in the Liturgy.
When they get a candle in the ceremony, they will see someone else's goal.
They will keep that person's goal in their prayers throughout the year.
In this way they will be keeping each other in their hearts
as they take on these leadership roles together.

 We are Fam-i-ly

We had our first school-wide family activity on Tuesday.
This year the 7th graders are heads of their own school family,
and they thrived in that role!

9/16-20- 7th , 8th and 6th

8th Grade

In literature the 8th grade has started reading Of Mice and Men.
Steinbeck teaches us a lot about
the art of the written word,
 the arch of a story,
and the reason we are all here.
We are going to dig deep into all of it.

In preparation for developing their writing skills,
they are practicing using the text to support their internal image of the settings.

They pulled quotes that spoke directly to the image of the first setting,
and only drew what was written.

This is practice for pulling quotes from a variety of credible sources
to support their ideas in their critical essays and research papers.
It also gives them practice with proper punctuation of quoted material and citing sources.
We are entering the big leagues, and this is just the warm up lap.

They have also been brainstorming topics for their Capstone Project,
which they will be presenting to you in the spring.

6th-8th Religion Classes

6-8 religion classes started work on a program called Start with Hello.
It aims to help students identify those who are socially isolated around them,
develop realistic ways to reach out to them,
and start with "hello,"
all with the ultimate goal of creating a community
where each individual feels seen and a sense of belonging.

7th Grade

7th grade completed both a nouns unit and vocabulary unit this week.
_________________________________________________________________________________
They started reading The Outsiders
and working on a characterization project
they will be adding to throughout the first half of the novel.
They will be covering Elements of Fiction
with a focus on both plot and characterization.
I have yet to meet a seventh grader who didn't enjoy this book.

Let's Go! (7 and 8)

8th Grade

In LA class the 8th grade is flying through nouns.
They were able to supply the entire outline at the beginning of the unit,
 examples and all.
Here they are reviewing for the test this Friday.
They worked in partners at various stations throughout the classroom
with a different topic at each one.

8th has already had a test on the summer prefixes and roots set.

They studied the meaning of the prefixes and roots
and how they are used in a variety of words.

7th Grade

7th grade had  a good time studying their vocabulary words with a skits game.
Here is W. COMMENDEERING K.'s box.

S. SALVAGES her teddy from the DEBRIS.

A. offers an unexplainable and SPASMODIC attack on the box.

They are certainly settling into their new homeroom...

and making themselves comfortable.

Stay tuned. There is a lot of excitement in our near future.
